Crop Marks
Crop marks, sometimes called trim marks or cut marks, are the small tick lines that show where the printed sheet is trimmed around the finished item, and they sit with the bleed so the cut lands inside the printed area.

Intro
Crop marks - sometimes called trim marks or cut marks - are the tick lines the printer uses to know where to trim. They print nothing themselves; they guide the cut. This is the plain-language answer to what they are, why they sit next to the bleed, and what happens when a file has neither.
What crop marks actually are
Crop marks are the small tick lines placed at the corners (and edges) of the artwork that mark the exact trim line of the finished item. They are printed in the file but they mark the edge, and they work with the bleed.
The picture: the bleed is the extra color outside the cut; the crop marks are the ruler that shows where the cut is.
How they connect to the bleed
Crop and bleed are one package because they solve one problem: print full to the edge, cut exact.
The cut is made through the bleed, so the printed surface reaches the edge, and the crop marks show the edge. A print-ready file usually carries both - the bleed so the artwork reaches the edge, and the marks so the cut is exact.

No bleed, no crop marks - the design ends where the print ends and the cut has no guide. The cut is a guess, or "by the shape of the artwork." Sometimes exact, sometimes it clips the design, leaving a rough edge or a thin white line on one side.
