Mardi Gras and Karneval 2026: corporate merch and gift ideas
A city-level occasion, not a national one. Cologne closes, Berlin works, and the unserved need is standing outside in February.

Quick answer
Karneval is worth a light activation if your recipients are actually in a carnival region, and it is wrong everywhere else. Build it at city level rather than nationally, use the local colours rather than a generic carnival palette, and produce for the real need, which is standing outside in February for six hours. Order in November of the preceding year, because knitwear colourways are committed by EU suppliers in the summer.
What Karneval is
Shrove Tuesday is the last day of carnival before Lent begins. In the Rhineland and the southern Netherlands it is the largest street celebration of the year, and businesses in those regions are effectively closed for several days around it. In 2026 that peak falls on Tuesday 17 February, with the season running from the preceding Thursday.
The important thing is how local it is. Cologne, Düsseldorf, Mainz, Limburg, Brabant and Binche each have their own colours, their own cries and their own societies, and the Swiss and Austrian Fasnacht cities run something different again. Berlin does not do Karneval at all. Cologne shuts down. A national German campaign is therefore wrong in one of those two cities no matter which way you write it.
The commercially useful fact is that almost nobody is serving the actual need. Every supplier sells masks, beads and props. The people in the street need warmth.
Merch ideas that hold up
A February outdoors set. Hand warmers, a wipe-clean poncho and an insulated flask, single-position print, packed as one parcel. This is genuinely needed, entirely unserved and it survives the day: the flask goes in the cupboard, the poncho goes in the car, and neither one is embarrassing on 18 February. For a regional site or a customer-facing giveaway it is the strongest thing you can put in someone's hand at seven in the morning in the cold.
A beanie or scarf in the city's own colours. Knitted in, not printed on. Cologne red and white where the recipients are actually from Cologne. Knitted colour reads as considered, printed colour reads as a rush job, and the difference is obvious at arm's length. This is the piece that gets worn for years and it is the one worth spending on.
Individually wrapped sweets in printed throwable sachets. The Kamelle tradition is throwing sweets, and a printed sachet fits it exactly. Individually wrapped only, allergen information documented on the pack, never loose confectionery. It is a low unit cost with high volume and it puts your artwork into a lot of hands in a single morning.
What to avoid
- Masks, costumes and single-use props. They fail on 18 February by definition, and this is the category most suppliers push hardest.
- Local society insignia, colours or cries used without permission. These belong to specific organisations and outsiders using them incorrectly are noticed immediately.
- A national campaign. If the same creative goes to Berlin and Cologne, one of them is wrong.
- Loose confectionery or any consumable without documented allergen information.
- Any association with Aalst carnival, which has drawn sustained international criticism over antisemitic imagery and lost its UNESCO listing.
- Deliveries scheduled into carnival cities during the closure. Businesses are shut for several days. Land before the Thursday preceding, or from Ash Wednesday onwards.
When to order
November of the preceding year. Knitwear is a predictable winter stockout category and EU suppliers commit their colourways by July, so a specific city palette has to be booked early or it is not available at all. Standard production runs around eight business days once artwork is approved, EU shipping adds two to six, and the German and Austrian supplier shutdown removes the last week of December from the middle of the window. A November order lands comfortably. A January one is chasing stock that was allocated six months earlier.
If any component is imported, the deadline moves earlier again, because the Lunar New Year factory shutdown begins on the same 17 February.
How SoMerch handles it
We source and print in house, so a colourway tied to one city is a production decision rather than a catalogue search, and we can run several city versions in the same batch. Kitting, storage and multi-address shipping across Germany, Austria, Switzerland, the Netherlands and Belgium are handled in one job, including the delivery timing around the regional closures. Tell us which cities your recipients are in and we will build the February outdoor set in those colours.
