What Ash Wednesday is

The first day of Lent in the Western Christian calendar, marked by fasting, abstinence and the imposition of ashes. It falls 46 days before Easter Sunday, so the date moves each year. In 2026 it is Wednesday 18 February.

Observance is strongest in Poland and Spain, and meaningful within Catholic communities in Austria, southern Germany, Belgium and France. It is not a public holiday anywhere in the footprint. Should you do merch for it?
