Islamic New Year 2026: corporate merch and gift ideas
A reflective observance marking a migration, not a calendar celebration. Send a greeting, and plan gifting around Eid al-Fitr instead.

Quick answer
Do not produce merch for the Islamic New Year. It is a reflective observance marking a migration, not a festive calendar rollover, and for a meaningful share of any recipient list the days that follow are a period of mourning. The correct response is a written greeting from leadership, sent to the people it is addressed to rather than broadcast. If you want a gifting programme that includes Muslim colleagues and customers properly, build it around Eid al-Fitr.
What the Islamic New Year is
The Hijri New Year marks 1 Muharram, the start of the Islamic lunar year. It commemorates the Hijra, the migration of the Prophet Muhammad and his followers from Mecca to Medina in 622 CE. In most traditions there is no gift exchange attached to it.
For Shia Muslims the first ten days of Muharram are a period of mourning leading to Ashura, which in 2026 falls on 25 June. The lunar date moves roughly eleven days earlier each Gregorian year and is confirmed by moon sighting, so some communities observe 17 or 18 June rather than 16 June. Any fixed-date gifting calendar carrying this occasion is already wrong.
Across this footprint it matters most where recipient lists include Muslim colleagues or customers, which in practice means France, Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands and Austria.
Should you do merch for it?
No. Treating it as the Islamic equivalent of 31 December is the standard Western error and it is the one to avoid. A celebration pack, party framing or countdown imagery misreads the occasion, and any activation running into the ten days of Muharram runs into a mourning period for part of your list. That includes a marketing push scheduled against 25 June.
Two further red lines. Religious symbols and calligraphy do not belong on merchandise as decoration, and never on disposable, food-contact, floor-facing or footwear items. And a generic new-year pack repurposed for the date treats one tradition as a recolour of another, which is the clearest version of getting this wrong.
What to do instead
Send the greeting. Then plan gifting around the occasions where it is native: Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha, with Eid al-Fitr the one to build a programme on. That means dates, sweets or coffee from a named maker with verifiable halal certification and full allergen documentation, in a make-to-order printed box, arriving before the morning of Eid rather than on the day.
For 2027, start the conversation in December 2026. The lunar date needs annual confirmation, certification and allergen documentation take time, and Ramadan itself shifts the delivery window. The comparable planning problem shows up on Eid al-Fitr and on Diwali, where the date also moves each year.
