The International Day of Friendship is a UN observance about relations between peoples and countries, not an office gifting date. In Europe it passes unnoticed and any gift has to invent its own reason. One check before dismissing it: if your list includes India, Bangladesh or parts of Latin America, friendship day is real there, on a different date.

What International Friendship Day is

The UN General Assembly designated 30 July as the International Day of Friendship in 2011, framing friendship between peoples and cultures as a route to peace. It falls on a Thursday in 2026, and it is a diplomatic observance rather than a personal one. Several countries run older and much larger friendship days of their own, including Argentina on 20 July and dates in August across India and Bangladesh, where it is a genuine consumer occasion.

Should you do merch for it?

Not in any of the nine markets we ship to. There is no exchange convention to attach a product to, so the item ends up explaining why it exists, which is how a gesture starts reading as marketing.

The usual formats make it worse. Wristbands, badges and photo-booth props are made for a single afternoon and fail the day-after test by definition, and date-printed apparel is unwearable on 31 July. Mandatory mixers land badly with people who did not opt in, and remote colleagues are excluded by the format. Late July is also the start of shutdown in France and Spain.

What to do instead

Do the market check first: if you employ people in South Asia or Latin America, their friendship day is commercially live and worth planning against the correct local date.
