What World Humanitarian Day is

World Humanitarian Day was designated by the UN General Assembly in 2008 and falls on 19 August, the anniversary of the 2003 bombing of UN headquarters in Baghdad, in which 22 people were killed. It honours humanitarian workers who have died or been injured in service. It is recognised across Europe, and it is a commemoration of deaths rather than a celebration.
