IDAHOBIT 2026: corporate merch and gift ideas

An awareness day about harm. No object carries that message, so we decline the date and point at what does work.

IDAHOBIT 2026: corporate merch and gift ideas

Quick answer

We do not produce merch for IDAHOBIT and we would advise you not to either. It is an awareness day about violence, discrimination and legal persecution, and no product carries that message. A tote does not say "against transphobia", it says "we noticed the date". Mark it with education, money or a policy commitment, and if you want something physical to exist, that conversation belongs to June and comes with conditions.

What IDAHOBIT is

IDAHOBIT is the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia, observed on 17 May, the date the World Health Organization removed homosexuality from the International Classification of Diseases in 1990. It draws attention to violence, discrimination and legal persecution directed at LGBTQ+ people.

It is marked across Germany, Austria, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Belgium, France and Spain, and it is contested and politically sensitive in Poland and parts of Bulgaria. In 2026 it falls on a Sunday.

Should you do merch for it?

No. Read the name of the day: it is framed as being against something. The subject matter is harm, and that is the gap that makes merchandise tonally wrong here in a way it is not in June. Producing goods for a day about harm converts goodwill into backlash, and the reaction is usually loudest from the people the gesture was supposed to support.

Slogan apparel is the clearest version of the failure. An empowering line written by an employer for employees to wear is a borrowed cause with a logo underneath it. Recolouring the company logo in flag colours and applying flag colours to catalogue stock read the same way.

There is also a duty of care point that has nothing to do with taste. If your list reaches recipients in a jurisdiction where receiving an identity-marked item creates personal risk, do not ship it. That is a safety decision, not a marketing one.

What to do instead

Three responses work on 17 May, and none of them are produced:

  • Internal education run by people who do this professionally, not by the marketing team
  • A donation with the amount and the receiving organisation both stated publicly
  • A named policy commitment with a date attached, so anyone can check it next year

If your organisation wants a physical expression of support, the vehicle is Pride Month in June, and only if there is year-round substance behind it. Without a documented position, a material action attached, and an honest answer to whether you would still do it if nobody could see it, an item makes things worse rather than better. See Pride Month for the conditions, and Transgender Day of Visibility for the same reasoning applied in March.

One planning note: commissioning an artist from the community and getting artwork approved adds six to eight weeks, so a June activation is decided in February, not in May.
