Blue Monday 2026: corporate merch and gift ideas

Blue Monday started as a press release. Mid-January cold is real, the date is not, and nothing you send should mention it.

Quick answer

Do not run a campaign named after Blue Monday. The concept came from a 2005 travel company press release, the psychologist credited with it has disowned it, and mental health organisations campaign against its use. What is real is that mid-January is dark, cold and long across northern Europe. If you want to send something in that week, send warmth, and print nothing on it about how anyone is feeling.

What Blue Monday is

The third Monday in January, promoted as "the most depressing day of the year". The formula behind it has no scientific basis and it was created as marketing. Despite that, it still gets wide media pickup in the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany and France every January, which is why it keeps appearing on corporate calendars long after the people who study the subject asked for it to be retired.

Should you do merch for it?

Not under that name. An employer cannot merchandise a day about employee unhappiness without commenting on its own workforce, and the moment it does, every existing grievance about hours, workload or pay gets read into the gift. A company with no year-round wellbeing position has no standing to name a mental health moment at all.

The stress ball is the textbook version of this failure. It jokes about pressure, it costs almost nothing, and it arrives from the organisation causing the pressure. Self-care items sent by a company that runs long hours land the same way. The item contradicts the message, and the recipient does the arithmetic instantly.

There is a second point worth making about January generally. This is when Q1 and spring planning should be happening, not when merch should be arriving. Anything landing in January was decided in autumn. If you are reading this in January and looking for something to send this month, the useful answer is to start building the spring and summer calendar instead, where the dates carry real conventions and the lead times are still open.

Merch ideas that hold up

A warmth item with no occasion on it. A heavyweight knitted beanie, a lambswool-blend scarf or a genuinely good blanket, shipped to home addresses in the third week of January. It works because it is useful in that specific week, not because of the date. Keep the decoration to a woven label or a small tonal mark, so the item can be worn in front of anyone without needing an explanation.

A named-maker coffee or tea in a printed sleeve. Real quality from a producer you can name, allergens documented, in a printed sleeve or box that carries your identity and nothing else. No message about mood, no encouragement, no reference to January. The gesture is the quality of the contents.

What to avoid

  • Stress balls, stress toys and any wellbeing prop. These are the clearest way to turn a gesture into an insult.
  • Any copy that names the employee's mood, or invites them to talk about it on a company channel.
  • Using the term Blue Monday at all if there is no year-round wellbeing position to point at.
  • Self-care framing from an organisation currently running heavy hours or a hiring freeze.

When to order

Mid-November. Knitwear is one of the predictable European stockout categories over winter, and suppliers commit that stock in the middle of the year, so both the yarn and the production slot need booking well ahead. On top of that, standard production runs around eight business days, decoration adds more, European transit is two to six business days, and Germany and Austria largely shut down between Christmas and New Year. The last working week of December is not available.

How SoMerch handles it

We source the warmth categories early, before winter stock is committed, print and produce in house so the decoration stays as quiet as the concept requires, and hold finished stock in our warehouse through the shutdown. Shipping goes out either in bulk or to individual home addresses across Europe from the same run, so remote employees are not the late half of the list.

Ask us for a mid-January warmth drop that does not mention the date.
